DOLPHIN CONNECTION TEXAS
INGLESIDE ON THE BAY, TEXAS

| 06/13/09 | 14 baby dolphins & lots of sting rays | | I am Erv Strong. My wife and best friend, Sonja, and I have spent the last 25-plus years with the resident dolphins of Corpus Christi Bay. Made possible by our terrific customers. Those that know me and how I feel about computers probably find it strange that I would be blogging. I've been told however that it's a good thing and quite painless. So we shall attempt to blog at least once per month keeping all you cetophiliacs up to date on our friends in the sea. As of today we have 14 newborn babies for 09. Two have been bitten by sharks. Half the tail on one three weeks old and the other bitten on its back just in front of the dorsal fin, both horrible to see, but these wounds are seldom fatal and both are doing very well and should be fine. It would seem that these attacks have increased with the opening of Packery Channel, allowing sharks better access to the bay. The population has increased by 10% according to some estimates. We know of at least four more pregnant dolphins so it should be a good year for babies. Currently, we have 6 generations of dolphins living at the same time. What a hoot! As always, June is the mating season for the stingrays. We average about 8 to 10 sightings per trip. What a thrill watching them jump and skim across the surface of the bay. |
