DOLPHIN CONNECTION TEXAS
INGLESIDE ON THE BAY, TEXAS

| 11/13/09 | Some are just silly ! | | Just like us, dolphins appear to have individual personalities. Some are just silly, others are more reserved. They hang out with chosen partners, friends and buddies. Perhaps even soul mates. Males get a close friend (another male) when only a few months old. We see these relationships lasting over 25 years. These males form little gangs with other males playing, mating, shopping, and causing mischief.
Junebug and Whistler, for example, were friends for over 15 years. We've known them about 28 yrs.. You never saw one without the other. One day they apparently had a disagreement and it ended. They are civil towards each other but are rarely seen near each other, even though they live in the same neighborhood. Whistler always seemed to be a bully towards other dolphins, a little up tight, maybe. I'm not saying he can't be fun. I'm just saying... Junebug, however, is much more laid back. he is one of the "silly ones." Junebug has allowed us to massage his chest, rub his teeth, and pull him about by his nose. He has thrown fish at us, which were eaten by us or some of our wonderful customers (trout flounder, red fish). He has played catch with us using cabbage head jellyfish and is the one who started what we call "The Game." Sonja's favorite. He comes to the boat, upside down, mouth wide open. His back is arched, and he is there for only one reason, to mess with you. One day we were having another incredible trip. The cetro's were all on one side of the boat playing with the dolphins. On the other side was Junebug, looking at everyone's butts. I looked at him thinking he probably thinks we're wimpy. Because, when they let you touch them, it is usually litely and out of what we might call kindness. So, I went over and pushed him down as hard as I could. WOW! He threw my hand out of the water and bobbed right back up. So, I did it again and so did he. Only, this time he laid his chin on the water looking at me as if to say you want a piece of me? I did. This time I interlocked my fingers and went under his chin to lift him up. I started pulling. He started pushing. He weights approx 375 lbs., floating in salt water, and I'm not moving him. Suddenly he slammed his head downward and about puled me right out of the boat. He still thinks we are wimps. Junebug is probably about 45 yrs. old. If you had the opportunity to meet him you'll likely never forget him. HE ROCKS. |
